VECINOS COLABORANDO – ORIHUELA COSTA
ACTION ON BEING THE VICTIM OF A CRIME
1) We hope that you will never experience being the victim of a crime but it
advisable to do certain things in case you are. It is better to be prepared.
a) Keep in a safe place details of important documents (Passport, Driving Licence,
Bank Accounts, Bank and Credit Cards, Fiscal – N.I.E. number, Insurance) and
important telephone numbers (Bank, Insurance and Solicitor).
b) Make a record of all valuable property, any identification numbers if electrical
and value.
2) If you are the victim of a crime, try to keep calm, (difficult I know) but if possible
note registered numbers and description of vehicles used and descriptions of
thieves.
3) Assess the situation. Normally the Police will NOT attend the scene of a crime
unless it is still taking place, the criminals are there, or the crime is serious. (All
crimes are serious to the victim but housebreaking, handbag snatching without
injury are not treated as serious crimes by the Police.) If you are the victim or
witness of a serious crime, (homicide, rape, abduction, serious assault or theft
where valuable property has been stolen) or you think intruders may still be
inside property, or a visit by the Police may be useful or you are not sure, call
them immediately.
4) If you call the Police, either using the 112 system, Policia Local – 649 900 304 or
Guardia Civil – 96 676 9143, give you name, address, reason for call and
location of incident. Do not disturb or touch anything until they arrive.
5) If Bank or Credit Cards have been stolen or if handled by intruders cancel them
immediately as they may have been scanned. If you do not know the contact
number to call to cancel the cards, your Co-ordinator has a list.
6) If you have details of offenders or vehicle used tell your Co-ordinator so that
information may be circulated.
7) It there is structural damage to your property, contact your Insurance Company to
arrange repairs.
8) Sit down calmly and compile a list of items stolen, identity numbers and values.
9) Make a report (Denuncia) at the Guardia Civil Office at the Ayuntamiento at
Orihuela Costa or their Station (Cuartel) at Torre de la Horadada. If a translator is
not provided free of charge, be prepared beforehand by obtaining a form from
your Co-ordinator and completing it beforehand, to act as an aid to the
translation. This is accepted by the Guardia Civil in most cases.
10)Report the incident to your Insurance Company. You will need a copy of the
report made to the Guardia Civil.
11)Inform your Co-ordinator of the incident.
12)Use the form provided to record details should they ever be needed and keep in
a safe place.
