A meeting took place this morning at the town hall in Playa Flamenca with other Orihuela Costa NHW groups (now totalling 64 ) was well supported and attended by Gerald representing Dream Hills.

Information was passed on from Chris Poole regarding his visit to Valencia in response to a request to attend the Civil Security Commission meeting on 6 Feb.  Chris presented a case for NHW and was able to offer facts to support the shortcomings in our area regarding crime prevention.  He took representatives from Orihuela Costa, Torrevieja and Pilar.  He said he was generally well received and achieved some good press coverage.

New leaflets on crime prevention have been provided by the Town Hall together with re-printed Vecinos Colaborando stickers.  These now have improved resistance to fading.  Both items will be distributed through our co-ordinators.

The following reports were received from Orihuela Costa area:

1.         Britannia Damp Proofing – An insurance company called GPS is visiting Britannia customers with an offer of a certificate for the 30-year guarantee period providing the work has been carried out correctly.  If it has not a cost may be due by the customer.  Be careful before paying out any extra money.

2.         Bicycle Thieves at Los Dolses.  Thieves hacksawed through locks on chains securing three cycles outside a villa.

3.         Charity collectors at Villa Martin.  Attempt made to break into house after collectors had been in the area earlier.

4.         Theft from car at Lidl La Zenia – Lady loading her car in supermarket car park when man opened rear car door and stole jacket.

5.         Various reports received of North Africans searching through rubbish bins in different parts of Orihuela Costa.  Do not throw away bank statements, credit card receipts or anything containing personal details without shredding, as these are probably what they are after.

6.         Schoolboy assaulted at 7.45am – 15 year old physically assaulted on his way to Playa Flamenca school by 25 year old man, possibly Rumanian.  The man stole his mobile phone and kissed him on the lips.  During the struggle the boy’s clothing was torn badly and he received cuts and abrasions to his arms.

7.         Car Park Scam in Irish Republic but could come here soon.  Whilst waiting in petrol station or supermarket car parks occupants of car are approached with perfume for sale.  Victims are asked to smell sample on laminated pad, it is not perfume but ether which makes the victim unconscious and easy prey for theft.

8.         Handbag snatch Villa Martin 3.30am.  Two ladies returning home from Priory Bar in El Galan were attacked by two males in their early twenties.

9.         Cars Attacked in underground car park at Mercadona Playa Flamenca 2.30pm.  7 cars in car park had their windows broken and items stolen from within cars.  Do not leave anything on view within vehicles.

10.      British Passport found.  It belongs to Joseph Paul Andrew Melia.  If anyone knows of this person please contact Mr Atkins 627713053.

The I.C.E ( In Case of Emergency ) is now in operation in Northern Europe and has been accepted in Orihuela Costa by Guardia Civil, Policia Judicial and Policia Local.  The details here in Spain would have to be entered in your mobile phone address list as E.C.E ( En Caso de Emergencia )  The number of the person you wish to be contacted should you unfortunately receive injuries from which you die or were unable to speak due to being unconscious or having serious facial injuries should be entered.  This could make a difference to persons being informed more rapidly providing your mobile phone is found by the authorities.

Date of next meeting:                                          Thursday, 12 April 2007, at 14.00 hrs. at La Casita.
