ISLAND OF TABARCA

The Island of Tabarca, about 2 km long and a maximum of 500 metres wide, lies a few miles off the coast, opposite Santa Pola and is about a 40 minute boat trip from Torrevieja. Each day the island is also visited by trips from Guardamar and Santa Pola

The boat leaves from Torrevieja at 11am and returns about 6.30 pm. We paid 18 Euros for a ticket, but it varies with the season. The boat leaves from just inside the port gates, opposite the fountain and there is a ticket office there. Booking was not necessary in June, but might be advisable in high season

We were disappointed that the island did not have sandy beaches, but we enjoyed the boat trip and the snorkelling. The island is well known for it's clear water. The boat has glass panels in the bottom and when they arrive at Tarbarca the water is very clear and they throw bread to the fish to attract them

The ride to the island is very picturesque, as you travel up the coast past Torrevieja, La Mata and Guardamar del Segura

Tabarca is 2 islands joined by a narrow strip of land. One part (on the left) contains the village and the other part is a nature reserve where no development is allowed

View looking towards the village and showing the only sandy beach, but it is stoney in the water. There were sunbeds and parasols for rent

The "beaches" are banks of seaweed and the bottom is stoney

Many people carried parasols and seemed to come primarily for the snorkelling

The village is quaint with a square and narrow back streets - no cars

There are several bars that do meals of the day
